Volume Profile (Fixed Range)

Draw the profile over a consolidation and use the POC as the range's gravity line — the most accepted price, and a common retest magnet after breakouts.

What it draws

Builds a horizontal volume-at-price histogram from only the bars inside a range you select. It reveals where volume actually transacted within that episode: the point of control (POC) at the highest-volume price and the value area containing the bulk (typically 70%) of the range's volume.

How to draw it

  1. Pick Volume Profile (Fixed Range) from the left toolbar (Projection group).
  2. Two clicks bound the range: click at the first bar and again at the last bar of the span to profile. The chart renders the volume histogram against the price axis for that range, marking the POC and value area boundaries.

How traders use it

  • Draw the profile over a consolidation and use the POC as the range's gravity line — the most accepted price, and a common retest magnet after breakouts.
  • Read the value area edges (VAH/VAL) as the range's practical support and resistance; acceptance outside value signals the balance is breaking.
  • Identify low-volume nodes inside the range: price tends to move quickly through them, making them useful for targets and stop placement.
  • Profile the leg of a strong trend to find the highest-volume pullback shelf where responsive buyers previously acted.

Settings reference

Double-click the drawing (or use its floating toolbar → gear) to open settings:

Setting Control Possible values Default Effect
Rows Layout select Number of rows | Ticks per row Number of rows How the profile’s price buckets are sized — a fixed count of rows across the range, or a fixed number of ticks per row.
Row Size number 8–200 24 Number of rows (or ticks per row, per Rows Layout) the volume histogram is bucketed into.
Volume select Up/Down | Total | Delta Up/Down What each row’s bar shows: split up/down volume, total volume, or the up-minus-down delta.
Value Area Volume number 1–100 70 Percentage of total volume the value area encloses around the point of control.
Color color any color (theme color picker) #05B878 Base drawing color (range border/selection); the histogram uses the volume colors below.
Line Width select 1px | 2px | 3px | 4px 2px Stroke thickness of the drawing’s lines and outlines.
Line Style select Solid | Dashed | Dotted Solid Dash pattern used for the drawing’s lines.
Up Volume color any color #c2a946 Bar color for the up (buy) volume portion of each row.
Down Volume color any color #4a90d9 Bar color for the down (sell) volume portion of each row.
Point of Control color any color #ffeb3b Color of the POC line at the highest-volume row.
Show VA Lines checkbox on/off on Draws horizontal lines at the value-area high and low.
Show Developing POC checkbox on/off off Draws the developing point of control as it evolved bar-by-bar through the range.
VA High Color color any color #05B878 Color of the value-area high line.
VA Low Color color any color #ef5350 Color of the value-area low line.
[Tab] Text — Text checkbox + textarea on/off, with a multiline text box for the label content off (on when the drawing already carries text) Enables an attached text label on the drawing; typing in the box auto-enables it and updates the label live.
[Tab] Text — Text Color color any color same as the drawing’s line color Color of the attached text label.
[Tab] Text — Font Size select 8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 48, 64, 72 14 Point size of the attached label text.
[Tab] Text — Bold checkbox on/off (B toggle button) off Renders the label in bold.
[Tab] Text — Italic checkbox on/off (I toggle button) off Renders the label in italics.
[Tab] Text — Word Wrap checkbox on/off off Wraps long label text onto multiple lines instead of one long line.
[Tab] Text — Text alignment (vertical) select Top | Middle | Bottom Top Vertical placement of the label relative to the drawing.
[Tab] Text — Text alignment (horizontal) select Left | Center | Right Center Horizontal placement of the label relative to the drawing.
[Tab] Coordinates number + datetime one row per anchor point: price (number, step 0.05) and local date/time the drawing’s current anchor values Edits anchor geometry numerically — changing a point’s price or time moves the drawing live on the chart.
[Tab] Visibility checkbox + number range interval buckets: Ticks; Seconds 1–59; Minutes 1–59; Hours 1–24; Days 1–366; Weeks 1–52; Months 1–12; Ranges (each bucket has an on/off checkbox, most also a from–to range) visible on all intervals Per-timeframe visibility rules — untick a bucket to hide the drawing on those chart resolutions, or narrow the from–to range within a bucket.

Editing & managing

  • Move / adjust: drag the drawing or any anchor handle; magnet mode snaps points to OHLC values.
  • Clone / lock / hide / delete from the floating toolbar or right-click menu.
  • Templates: save the current style from the settings dialog and reapply it to new drawings.
  • Every action is undoable (⌘Z / Ctrl+Z).

Watch out for

  • The profile only describes the bars you selected — shifting the range boundaries by even a few bars can move the POC materially, so anchor the range to a structurally meaningful episode.
