TRIX

Trade zero-line crosses: TRIX moving above zero signals the smoothed trend has turned up; below zero, down.

What it does

TRIX is the 1-bar percentage rate of change of a triple-smoothed EMA of the close, typically with a 14 or 15 period setting. Price is smoothed three times with the same EMA length, and TRIX plots how fast that heavily smoothed line is changing, oscillating around zero. The triple smoothing is designed to filter out moves shorter than the chosen cycle so only meaningful momentum shifts register.

How to add it

Click Indicators (ƒx) in the header.

Search “TRIX” and click the result.

Hover its legend row and click the gear to open settings.

How traders use it

  • Trade zero-line crosses: TRIX moving above zero signals the smoothed trend has turned up; below zero, down.
  • Add a signal line (a 9-period EMA of TRIX) and trade its crossovers for earlier entries than the zero cross.
  • Trade divergences: price making new highs while TRIX rolls over flags a tiring trend.
  • Use it as a slow confirmation filter behind a faster entry tool, taking only trades that agree with TRIX's side of zero.

Tips

  • Use Add to favorites in the legend menu; starred studies surface at the top of the picker.
  • Reference levels (where the study has them) are editable — tune them to the instrument you're trading.
  • Hide the study from the legend eye instead of removing it when you only want it out of the way temporarily.

Watch out for

  • Triple smoothing means substantial lag; TRIX turns well after price does and gives back profit at reversals.
  • In ranges it meanders around zero and its crosses lose meaning.
