Dext Boring & Explosive Candle

A cluster of boring candles in a tight range marks energy building; place breakout orders around that consolidation.

What it does

Classifies each candle by the size of its real body relative to its full high-low range to separate quiet consolidation bars from decisive expansion bars. A boring candle has a small body (commonly under about 50 percent of the range), reflecting indecision or base-building, while an explosive candle has a dominant body, reflecting one-sided conviction. The concept comes from breakout-trading methods where clusters of boring candles set the stage and an explosive candle confirms the breakout.

How traders use it

  • A cluster of boring candles in a tight range marks energy building; place breakout orders around that consolidation.
  • An explosive candle breaking out of a boring-candle base, ideally on elevated volume, is the entry trigger.
  • Use the boring cluster's opposite extreme as the logical stop location since the consolidation defines risk.
  • Explosive candles against the prevailing trend after an extended run can mark climax rather than continuation — demand follow-through before trusting them.

Tips

  • Save the configured chart as a study template (Indicators menu) to reapply this exact setup elsewhere.
  • Right-click the indicator's line for quick actions — settings, visibility and removal without hunting through menus.
  • Use Add to favorites in the legend menu; starred studies surface at the top of the picker.

Watch out for

  • Body-to-range ratios are scale-free but context-blind; an explosive candle inside a wide choppy range means far less than one leaving a tight base.
  • Fixed percentage thresholds misclassify bars on very low-range days where tiny absolute moves produce large body ratios.
