Moving Average Hamming

Use it wherever you would use an SMA but want less jitter: trend direction from its slope, and price-versus-line for bias.

What it does

The Hamming Moving Average weights prices inside its window using a Hamming window function from signal processing — a raised-cosine bell that emphasizes the middle of the window and tapers the edges without cutting them to zero. This weighting suppresses short-cycle noise more evenly than a simple or triangular average, giving a smooth curve with well-behaved (low-ripple) filtering. Practically, it is a smoother alternative to an SMA of the same length.

How to add it

Click Indicators (ƒx) in the header.

Search “Moving Average Hamming” and click the result.

Hover its legend row and click the gear to open settings.

How traders use it

  • Use it wherever you would use an SMA but want less jitter: trend direction from its slope, and price-versus-line for bias.
  • Its smoothness makes slope changes cleaner signals: a rollover of the Hamming MA is less likely to be single-bar noise than an SMA turn.
  • Pair a short and long Hamming MA for a low-noise crossover system on choppy instruments.
  • Works well as the basis line inside envelopes or as a smoother input feeding other indicators.
  • Because edge bars get low weight, expect it to ignore one-bar spikes that would bend an SMA.

Tips

  • Drag the indicator to its own pane from the legend ⋯ menu if it crowds the price chart.
  • Double-click any of its lines to jump straight into the settings dialog.
  • Save the configured chart as a study template (Indicators menu) to reapply this exact setup elsewhere.

Watch out for

  • The bell weighting centers its effective information in the middle of the window, adding lag versus front-weighted averages like the EMA or WMA.
  • It is uncommon, so no widely shared conventional settings or public track record exists; treat parameter choices as your own research.
