Dext SSL Channel

A flip of the channel to bullish (price closing above the high-side average) is a long signal; the bearish flip is a short or exit signal.

What it does

The SSL (Semaphore Signal Level) Channel builds two moving averages — one of the highs and one of the lows over a lookback (traditionally 10 periods) — and switches which of them is the active baseline depending on whether price last closed above the high-average or below the low-average. The result is a two-line channel whose flips generate unambiguous trend-direction signals, with the lines usually colored by the current state. It behaves like a stepped trend filter with a built-in buffer zone.

How traders use it

  • A flip of the channel to bullish (price closing above the high-side average) is a long signal; the bearish flip is a short or exit signal.
  • Ride the trend while the channel color holds and use the channel line as a trailing reference for stops.
  • Avoid taking flips inside obvious consolidation; require the flip to coincide with a break of range structure.
  • Use a longer lookback for the channel on the trading timeframe or a higher-timeframe SSL as a directional filter, entering only in its direction.

Tips

  • Drag the indicator to its own pane from the legend ⋯ menu if it crowds the price chart.
  • Double-click any of its lines to jump straight into the settings dialog.
  • Save the configured chart as a study template (Indicators menu) to reapply this exact setup elsewhere.

Watch out for

  • In ranging markets the channel flips repeatedly and the strategy bleeds on whipsaws — it is strictly a trend-following tool.
  • Signals occur on closes crossing average levels, so fast reversals can flip the channel a bar after entry.
