Accumulative Swing Index

Trade ASI like price: draw trendlines and support/resistance on the ASI line, and treat an ASI trendline break as an early confirmation of a price trendline break.

What it does

The Accumulative Swing Index (ASI) is Welles Wilder's running total of the Swing Index, a formula that scores each bar from roughly -100 to +100 using the relationships between the current and previous open, high, low and close. By accumulating these scores, ASI produces a line intended to be a 'purified' version of price that isolates real swing strength. It was designed for futures but is applied to any market.

How traders use it

  • Trade ASI like price: draw trendlines and support/resistance on the ASI line, and treat an ASI trendline break as an early confirmation of a price trendline break.
  • A rising ASI making higher highs confirms an uptrend; a falling ASI confirms a downtrend.
  • Divergence between ASI and price (price makes a new extreme, ASI does not) warns the swing lacks internal strength.
  • Wilder's rule: a breakout in price is validated only when ASI also exceeds its value at the previous significant price swing point.
  • Use it as a confirmation layer for breakout trades rather than a standalone entry generator.

Tips

  • Reference levels (where the study has them) are editable — tune them to the instrument you're trading.
  • Hide the study from the legend eye instead of removing it when you only want it out of the way temporarily.
  • Merge multiple oscillators into one pane from the legend ⋯ menu to compare them on a shared axis.

Watch out for

  • The formula depends on a 'limit move' style scaling parameter that has no natural value in non-futures markets, making levels somewhat arbitrary.
  • As a cumulative line its absolute value is meaningless; only its shape, trend and divergences matter.
