Dext VAMA Volume Adjusted Moving Average Function

Treat VAMA as a fair-value line backed by volume: price above a rising VAMA confirms an advance that volume actually supports.

What it does

A Volume Adjusted Moving Average in the spirit of Richard Arms' design: each bar's price is weighted by how its volume compares to average volume, so heavy-volume bars pull the average toward their prices much harder than quiet bars. The result is an average of where the real business was transacted rather than a purely time-weighted line. It reacts strongly to institutional-scale activity and glides through low-participation drift.

How traders use it

  • Treat VAMA as a fair-value line backed by volume: price above a rising VAMA confirms an advance that volume actually supports.
  • Crosses of price through VAMA are more significant than crosses of an equivalent SMA because the line embodies volume commitment.
  • A widening gap between VAMA and a plain moving average of the same length reveals that recent volume is concentrated on one side — a subtle accumulation or distribution tell.
  • Use VAMA as dynamic support/resistance: heavy-volume zones embedded in the line tend to defend it.

Tips

  • Double-click any of its lines to jump straight into the settings dialog.
  • Save the configured chart as a study template (Indicators menu) to reapply this exact setup elsewhere.
  • Right-click the indicator's line for quick actions — settings, visibility and removal without hunting through menus.

Watch out for

  • The indicator is only as good as the volume data; symbols with erratic or unreliable volume produce a jumpy, misleading line.
  • A single extreme-volume event (block deal, expiry) can dominate the average for many bars afterward.
