Auto Pitchfork

The median line acts as a magnet: price tends to return to it, so a pullback to the median line in the direction of the fork's slope is a common entry area.

What it does

Auto Pitchfork automatically finds three significant swing points (a pivot low/high followed by two alternating pivots) and draws an Andrews Pitchfork from them. The median line runs from the first pivot through the midpoint of the other two, with parallel upper and lower tines forming a sloped channel. It saves you from manually picking pivots and updates as new swings form.

How traders use it

  • The median line acts as a magnet: price tends to return to it, so a pullback to the median line in the direction of the fork's slope is a common entry area.
  • The upper and lower tines act as sloped support and resistance; fading touches of the outer tines back toward the median line is the classic play inside an established trend.
  • A strong close beyond an outer tine suggests acceleration or a trend change; wait for a retest of the broken tine before acting.
  • Failure to reach the median line after bouncing from a tine (a Hagopian-style warning) signals the trend is weakening and price may break the opposite side.
  • Confirm entries at the tines with momentum tools such as RSI or Stochastic to avoid catching a channel breakout.

Every plot's color, line width and visibility can be changed on the Style tab. Precision, price-scale labels and status-line values are configurable at the bottom of the Style tab.

Tips

  • The legend eye toggles it off without losing your settings — handy for before/after comparisons.
  • Its price-scale label can be switched off per-indicator at the bottom of the Style tab if the axis gets crowded.
  • Drag the indicator to its own pane from the legend ⋯ menu if it crowds the price chart.

Watch out for

  • The fork is only as good as the automatically chosen pivots; a new swing can re-anchor the whole structure and redraw past levels.
  • Works best in orderly trending swings; in choppy or news-driven markets price ignores the tines frequently.
