Aroon

Read trend state: Aroon Up above 70 with Aroon Down below 30 indicates a solid uptrend; the reverse a downtrend.

What it does

The Aroon indicator measures how recently price set its highest high and lowest low within the lookback, default 25 bars. Aroon Up equals 100 times (25 minus bars since the 25-bar high) divided by 25; Aroon Down does the same with the 25-bar low. Fresh highs push Aroon Up toward 100, fresh lows push Aroon Down toward 100, so the pair reveals whether a trend is present and which side owns it.

How traders use it

  • Read trend state: Aroon Up above 70 with Aroon Down below 30 indicates a solid uptrend; the reverse a downtrend.
  • Trade crossovers: Aroon Up crossing above Aroon Down is an early signal that an uptrend may be starting.
  • Spot consolidations: both lines drifting below 50 means neither new highs nor new lows are being made and a range is in force.
  • Use it to time breakout watchlists: a long-dormant instrument whose Aroon Up snaps to 100 has just made a fresh high worth investigating.

Tips

  • Hide the study from the legend eye instead of removing it when you only want it out of the way temporarily.
  • Merge multiple oscillators into one pane from the legend ⋯ menu to compare them on a shared axis.
  • Double-click the plot to open settings directly, skipping the legend hover.

Watch out for

  • It only tracks the timing of highs and lows, not their size, so a marginal new high moves it as much as a huge one.
  • Crossovers whipsaw in choppy markets and the lines jump abruptly as old extremes age out of the window.
