What it shows
Line break charts (three-line break by default) draw a new vertical box only when price closes beyond the previous box, and reverse only when price closes beyond the extreme of the last N boxes, most commonly three. Up boxes and down boxes alternate in color, and a color flip is itself the classic reversal signal. Like Renko, it removes time from the picture and keeps only significant closes.
How it's built
Using closing prices, a new box in the trend direction prints whenever the close exceeds the prior box's high (uptrend) or low (downtrend); a reversal box prints only when the close breaks the low or high of the last N boxes, where N is the number-of-lines setting. Boxes are event-driven, so the horizontal axis is not uniform in time.
Switch to it
Open the chart-type menu in the header (next to the interval buttons) and pick Line break — or pin it as a favourite for one-click switching.
When to use it
- Confirming trend changes with a fixed, objective close-based rule
- Filtering minor pullbacks that would flip color on a candle chart
- Swing traders wanting a simple reversal signal without indicator parameters
Settings reference
Open Chart Settings (gear, or double-click the chart background) with this type active. Every setting, its possible values and what it changes:
| Setting | Control | Possible values | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up bars | two-colors | any color (fill / border) | #089981 fill / #089981 border | Fill and border colors of up (bullish) line-break blocks. |
| Down bars | two-colors | any color (fill / border) | #F23645 fill / #F23645 border | Fill and border colors of down (bearish) line-break blocks. |
| Projection up bars | two-colors | any color (fill / border) | #a9dcc3 fill / #a9dcc3 border | Colors of the still-forming up block at the right edge, which repaints until confirmed; the pale default separates it from confirmed blocks. |
| Projection down bars | two-colors | any color (fill / border) | #f5a6ae fill / #f5a6ae border | Colors of the still-forming down block at the right edge. |
| [Inputs] Number of lines | number | 2 to 10, step 1 | 3 | How many previous blocks price must break beyond to draw a reversal block (3 = classic Three Line Break). Higher values demand a bigger counter-move, so reversals are rarer and trends persist longer on the chart. |
| [Inputs] Source | select | Close, Open, High, Low, HL/2, HLC/3, OHLC/4 | Close | Which price is compared against previous blocks when deciding whether a new block forms. |
| [Precision] Precision | select | Default, 0 (1), 1 (1.1), 2 (1.01), 3 (1.001), 4 (1.0001), 5 (1.00001), 6 (1.000001), 7 (1.0000001), 8 (1.00000001) | Default | Number of decimal places used for prices on the scale and labels. Default follows the symbol's own tick precision. |
Watch out for
- Signals come only from closes of the base interval, so reversals arrive late relative to intrabar moves, and time/gap information is discarded
