Bars Charts

Reading the full range and close location of every period without the visual weight of candle bodies.

What it shows

A bar chart (OHLC bars) draws one vertical bar per period showing the full trading range from low to high. A small tick on the left side marks the open price and a tick on the right side marks the close. Bars are typically colored up (close above open or above the prior close) or down, so you can read direction and range at a glance.

How it's built

Each bar is built from the open, high, low and close of a fixed time interval, so bars are evenly spaced along the time axis. The vertical line spans low to high, the left notch sits at the open and the right notch at the close.

Switch to it

Open the chart-type menu in the header (next to the interval buttons) and pick Bars — or pin it as a favourite for one-click switching.

When to use it

  • Reading the full range and close location of every period without the visual weight of candle bodies
  • Spotting wide-range and narrow-range bars, inside bars and outside bars for volatility-based setups
  • Cleaner display on dense, zoomed-out charts where candle bodies would overlap into a solid block
  • Traders trained on classic Western bar patterns such as key reversals and pivot bars

Settings reference

Open Chart Settings (gear, or double-click the chart background) with this type active. Every setting, its possible values and what it changes:

Setting Control Possible values Default Effect
Color bars based on previous close checkbox on/off off Colors each bar by comparing its close to the previous bar's close instead of its own open. A bar that closed higher than the prior bar shows the up color even if it closed below its open.
Thin bars checkbox on/off on Draws OHLC bars with a thin 1px stroke. Unchecked, bar strokes thicken proportionally as you zoom in, making bars bolder.
Colors two-colors any color (up / down) up #089981, down #F23645 Sets the up and down bar colors. Rising bars are painted the first color, falling bars the second.
Precision select Default, 0 (1), 1 (1.1), 2 (1.01), 3 (1.001), 4 (1.0001), 5 (1.00001), 6 (1.000001), 7 (1.0000001), 8 (1.00000001) Default Number of decimal places shown on the price scale and price readouts. Default derives the precision from the symbol's own price scale.

Watch out for

  • The open and close ticks are small, so on compressed charts direction can be hard to read compared to candles
