What it shows
HLC bars are OHLC bars drawn without the open tick: each bar shows only the high-low range as a vertical line plus a right-side tick at the close. Removing the open reduces clutter and focuses attention on where price finished within its range. Coloring still signals whether the period closed higher or lower.
How it's built
For each fixed time interval the bar spans the period's low to high, with a single notch on the right at the closing price. Bars are uniformly spaced in time; the open is used only for up/down coloring, not drawn.
Switch to it
Open the chart-type menu in the header (next to the interval buttons) and pick HLC bars — or pin it as a favourite for one-click switching.
When to use it
- Long lookback charts where opens add noise and you mainly care about range and close
- Close-based systems and end-of-day analysis where the close is the decision price
- A minimal look that still preserves each period's volatility, unlike a pure line chart
Settings reference
Open Chart Settings (gear, or double-click the chart background) with this type active. Every setting, its possible values and what it changes:
| Setting | Control | Possible values | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Color | color | any color | #2962FF | Single color for all HLC bars. This chart type draws only the high-low range and a close tick, with no up/down coloring and no open tick. |
| Thin bars | checkbox | on/off | on | Draws bars with a thin 1px stroke. Unchecked, strokes grow thicker as bars widen when zoomed in. |
| Precision | select | Default, 0 (1), 1 (1.1), 2 (1.01), 3 (1.001), 4 (1.0001), 5 (1.00001), 6 (1.000001), 7 (1.0000001), 8 (1.00000001) | Default | Number of decimal places shown on the price scale and price readouts. Default derives the precision from the symbol's own price scale. |
Watch out for
- Without the open you cannot see gaps between open and prior close or judge candle-style body patterns
