High-Low Charts

Volatility scanning, since wide and narrow ranges stand out immediately.

What it shows

A high-low chart draws each period as a vertical box or band spanning only the low to the high, without marking open or close inside it. It is a pure range view: every element shows how far price traveled in that period, and coloring typically reflects whether the period's midpoint or close moved up or down. Optional labels can print the high and low values on the extremes.

How it's built

For each fixed time interval a rectangle or thick bar is drawn from the period's low to its high; open and close are not rendered. Periods are uniformly spaced in time.

Switch to it

Open the chart-type menu in the header (next to the interval buttons) and pick High-low — or pin it as a favourite for one-click switching.

When to use it

  • Volatility scanning, since wide and narrow ranges stand out immediately
  • Marking recent extremes for breakout levels and stop placement
  • Decluttered higher-timeframe views where only the traded range matters

Settings reference

Open Chart Settings (gear, or double-click the chart background) with this type active. Every setting, its possible values and what it changes:

Setting Control Possible values Default Effect
Body checkbox on/off on Fills each bar's high-to-low box with the up/down color. Unchecked leaves only the outline (and labels, if enabled).
Colors two-colors any color (up / down) up #089981, down #F23645 Sets the up and down colors for the high-low boxes: rising bars use the first color, falling bars the second.
Borders checkbox on/off on Draws an outline around each high-low box. Unchecked, boxes render with fill only.
Labels checkbox on/off on Prints the high and low prices as small text labels on the bars. Labels appear only when bars are wide enough (zoomed in to roughly 20px per bar or more).
Precision select Default, 0 (1), 1 (1.1), 2 (1.01), 3 (1.001), 4 (1.0001), 5 (1.00001), 6 (1.000001), 7 (1.0000001), 8 (1.00000001) Default Number of decimal places shown on the price scale and price readouts. Default derives the precision from the symbol's own price scale.

Watch out for

  • With no open or close shown, direction within the period is invisible, so pair it with a close-based reference if direction matters
